AMT Tape Signals

Volume tape breakout signals with moving average filtering

Displays indications when Volume Tape exceeds a specified distance, measured in standard deviations, from the average Volume. Signals can be filtered based on the location of current price vs. a moving average, giving optimized directional signals.

The Concept

Tape Signals detects unusual volume activity relative to recent norms using statistical deviation. When volume surges beyond a configurable distance from its moving average, the study generates buy or sell signals. An optional moving average filter ensures signals align with the prevailing trend direction, reducing noise from counter-trend events.

How to Read It

Triangles and dots mark signal events on the price chart.

  • Tape Buy (triangle up) — volume surge with bullish conditions met
  • Tape Sell (triangle down) — volume surge with bearish conditions met
  • Absorption Buy/Sell (dots) — a secondary signal tier for notable but less extreme volume events
  • When the MA filter is enabled, only signals aligned with trend direction are shown

Practical Tips

The Signal Level controls sensitivity — lower values produce more signals, higher values filter to only extreme volume events. Enable the MA filter to reduce noise by showing only trend-aligned signals. The Filter Moving Average type and length let you match the trend filter to your trading style. Works on any chart type.

Input & Settings

1Moving Average: Type

Defines the Moving Average type to be applied to Volume Tape data.

2Moving Average: Length

Sets the length of the Volume Tape Moving Average, and the period for standard deviation calculations. Min: 1, Max: 1000000.

3Absorption: Signal Level

Sets the level, in standard deviations from the average Volume Tape, at which Absorption signals are triggered. Min: 0.01, Max: 10.

4Absorption: Symbol Offset

Defines the distance, in ticks, offset above/below the bar high/low at which to display Absorption symbols. Min: 0, Max: 1000.

5Tape: Signal Level

Sets the level, in standard deviations from the average Volume Tape, at which Tape Buy/Sell signals are triggered. Min: 0.01, Max: 10.

6Tape: Symbol Offset

Defines the distance, in ticks, offset above/below the bar high/low at which to display Tape Buy/Sell symbols. Min: 0, Max: 1000.

7Filter Signals Based on Moving Average

When enabled, Absorption and Tape signals are filtered based on the location of current price with respect to the Filter Moving Average. Price above: Display only Buy signals. Price below: Display only Sell signals.

8Filter Moving Average: Input Data

Defines the data upon which to base the Filter Moving Average.

9Filter Moving Average: Type

Defines the type of the Filter Moving Average.

10Filter Moving Average: Length

Sets the length of the Filter Moving Average. Min: 1, Max: 1000000.
