A clear starting point
What is AMT Balance?
How Analytical Market Theory relates to Auction Market Theory—and what our chart terminology means.
One acronym, two different uses
On this site, AMT stands for Analytical Market Theory, the name behind AMT Balance and its chart studies. In broader trading education, AMT also commonly means Auction Market Theory. The shared initials can be confusing. They do not make the two names interchangeable.
AMT Balance is our specific set of chart tools and a method for organizing market structure and historical context. Auction Market Theory is the broader auction perspective used to discuss price discovery, value, balance, and movement away from balance. Our research also examines established ideas such as opening types, Initial Balance, and value-area behavior.
Where Market Profile fits
Market Profile is a way of organizing market activity by price and time. It helps traders study the auction; it is not another name for the AMT Balance Zone Map. The CBOT study guide describes the market through a dual-auction process and presents Market Profile as a decision-support tool. See the CBOT’s A Six-Part Study Guide to Market Profile for that background.
Using established auction concepts does not mean claiming to have invented them. This site separates those concepts from our own indicators and from the historical tests we publish. You can read my story and how the work developed.
The terms you will see here
- AMT Balance Zone Map
- Our chart view for locating price relative to Balance and the surrounding reference areas. Identify the selected view or timeframe before interpreting its levels.
- Balance / balance zone
- Balance is the central reference on the selected view. The balance zone is the area between Balance High and Balance Low. Neither should be assumed to be the same as a Market Profile value area.
- Z1–Z6
- The six location bands used in the zone research. A prior-close zone and current-open zone define a historical setup; the labels describe location, not an automatic entry.
- Reach
- Whether price reaches a specified destination under the study’s rules. A reach rate describes that event, not the profitability of a trade.
- Reaction
- A response at a reference: resistance above the open or support below the open in the zone research. Read the dashboard’s measurement rules; reaching an area and reacting there are different outcomes.
- Zone Expectation Dashboard
- Historical reach and reaction results grouped by opening context. Compare the market, date range, setup, and sample size before using a percentage. Dashboard access requires an active AMT Balance license.
From a concept to a testable question
“Price may return toward value” is an idea. A research question needs a precise reference, session window, trigger, and measured outcome. Our Half-Gap study asks whether price reaches a defined midpoint. The 80% Value Area Rule test examines a particular confirmation rule. Neither result should be substituted for a trade’s entry, stop, and exit.
That is the purpose of the research: make the question and its limits visible, so you can compare the evidence with what happens on your own chart.
